Coweta County resident Diane Dougherty was the host for “Catholic Liturgy: Justice Rising in Atlanta.”
The service was held on the evening of Jan. 17 at First Metropolitan Community Church in Atlanta. Deacon Barbara Duff Dougherty, both members of the Association of Roman Catholic Women Priests, celebrated a Catholic liturgy.
Two initiatives were then shared – developing Catholic intentional communities and the Gender Equality Project initiated by Father Roy Bourgeois.
Bourgeois was excommunicated in October – in part because of his active support of women’s ordination. The Association of Roman Catholic Women Priests issued a statement calling the Vatican’s dismissal of Bourgeois “an abuse of spiritual power and a cowardly act by a morally bankrupt institution that rejects Jesus’ mandate of Gospel equality.”
The ARCWP called Bourgeois “a prophetic priest, whose advocacy for women’s ordination has become a lightning rod that has brought worldwide support for women priests in the Roman Catholic Church.”
