Guest speaker Cathy Lee Phillips is a native of Newnan and is an author, speaker, humorist and Christian educator.
Phillips attended LaGrange College where she earned a double major in religion and Spanish, graduating summa cum laude in 1978. Phillips was offered a Presidential Merit Award to attend Scarritt College in Nashville, Tenn., where she received her master of arts in Christian education degree.
While a student at Scarritt, Phillips was president of the Student Government Association and was elected graduate assistant for the Christian education department.

She graduated high with honors in 1980.

Returning to Georgia, Phillips served several large United Methodist churches in Atlanta where she developed and maintained comprehensive Christian Education and Spiritual Formation programs for all ages. Using her natural love of writing, Phillips frequently created her own curriculum and programming materials.

In 1986, she married Dr. Jerry E. Phillips, an ordained minister in the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church. They were happily married until he died in 1992 from complications related to a heart transplant he received in May 1990.

In an instant, Phillips was a 35-year-old widow. Her writing was a therapeutic outlet during a struggle with intense grief. Gradually, she felt God calling her to use writing to help others experiencing grief and pain.

Phillips writes so that folks may identify with her experiences, thus redeeming her pain and transforming it into something positive that teaches others.

Her work has appeared in periodicals including Angels on Earth – from Guideposts, Today’s Christian Woman – from Christianity Today and Church School Leader – from the United Methodist Publishing House.

In 1997 Phillips won first place in the humor article category from the Evangelical Press Association Higher Goals in Christian Journalism Awards. She was nominated as Georgia Author of the Year 2001.

In February 2009, Phillips was selected as the 2009 Georgia Author of the Year by the National League of American Pen Women, Georgia Chapter.

Phillips has written for international publishers including Thomas Nelson, Zondervan, Guideposts Books, Howard Books, Women of Faith and the United Methodist Publishing House. She is a regular columnist for The Wesleyan Christian Advocate, the official news source of the United Methodist Church in Georgia.

Cathy Lee Phillips has authored five books — "Silver in the Slop," "Gutsy Little Flowers," "Silver Reflections: A Daily Journal," "Aging, Ailments, and Attitudes" and "Honey, There’s a Cat in the Freezer!"

Each book is a collection of short stories. With her signature inspirational humor, Phillips shares the Christian gospel in unique and entertaining ways.

A popular event leader and speaker for church, civic, educational and business organizations, Phillips customizes every event to meet the needs of each particular group. She often uses her gift as a soloist to weave music into her programs.

Her next collection of inspirational humor will be entitled "I Don’t Have Baggage – I Have Designer Luggage."

The luncheon is an annual tradition at Cornerstone to honor all who have been touched by breast cancer.
