We need flag amendment

Everyone has their own opinion and concern about Starship. To me it boils down to what the U.S. Constitution allows. Right or wrong, Starship has the right to petition to exist, and the final decision will be made in accordance with our legal system, which is made up of the people we elected. However, I feel there is another, far more important controversy that should concern us all. Not just the residents of Thomas Crossroads or Coweta County, but all Americans.

Where is the outcry about the decision of the Supreme Court to allow the burning or desecration of the American flag? We shout and scream about a business that many find distasteful, but no one seems to care the very symbol that allows our right to be heard can be disgraced as an act of freedom of speech.

Old Glory is known the world over as a symbol of freedom. She flies over our government buildings and embassies. She is proudly waved at parades on our national holidays. Our flag leads our soldiers into battle to protect our freedoms. And sadly, our flag drapes the caskets of our fallen heroes who gave their all so Starship and others can pursue their goals.

As far as ownership, the flag of the United States is not my property, nor is it anyone else's. It is ours collectively. It is community property. Therefore, I nor anyone else should be permitted to do with it as we please.

Our flag should be displayed daily, with pride and respect. It should be protected by a constitutional amendment. Our flag may be made of cloth, but it is held together by the thread of the pride and dreams of American from all races, creeds and religious backgrounds. So, say what you want about Starship. It's your right. But write your congressman and senators to get the flag amendment passed. There are ways other than humiliating the flag to show dissent.

If Starship does succeed, they also will have the right to fly the flag over their business. What a country.
