We must work together

A letter to political leaders: The time for campaigning is over. It is time to end the vitriolic rhetoric of the last four years. In the name of good government and sanity, now is the time to roll up your sleeves, set aside the partisan bickering, and step away from the cameras. Close the door behind you and get to the table. This is going to require sacrifice, political courage and willpower by all parties involved. We must work together, and give up something in order to get something worthwhile. Democrats are going to have to agree on some sort of entitlement reform. Republicans are going to have to agree on some sort of revenue increases, whether in the form of deleting some deductions and simplifying the tax code or outright new taxes. Most importantly, both parties are going to have to admit that all citizens are going to have to help pay for the war on terror that has been waged for the last 10 years, and likely will not end soon. No one has ever asked the American people to help pay the price for this war. Wars are not free. The only citizens who have paid any price (other than donations) are the volunteers in the military and their families, some of whom have paid the ultimate price.
We are all responsible for our deficit we have created, our wars we have started, our environment we are destroying, our health care we are bankrupting, and our economy we have neglected. This great nation was founded on the idea of compromise. The Constitution itself is a collection of compromises. It is in this spirit of great accomplishment, this nation itself must find a way to make it work. Roben Pinson
