I wanted to commend Malcolm Jackson and the citizens of Coweta County for their exemplary performance in welcoming home our Vietnam veterans on 17 October 2011.
I was traveling from Fort Benning, Ga., to Knoxville, Tenn., after dropping off my son-in-law who was deploying. I stopped by my old platoon sergeant's house for a short visit that lasted the evening.
David Brown and his wife asked me to remain the night so I could attend the welcome home event. It was a well-organized and professional event. The empty seat with pictures being held of our soldiers who gave their all was very emotional and radiated to all citizens in attendance that Coweta County has not forgotten you or your family's sacrifice.
To my pleasant surprise, a combat picture of David Brown and I holding our platoon battle flag, which is now secured in the Special Warfare Museum in Fayetteville, N.C., near Fort Bragg, was in the Oct. 14 issue of The Newnan Times-Herald. Also, I very much enjoyed the special edition in the paper that compiled experiences of your county's veteran soldiers.
It was a great honor and opportunity to attend your welcome home event, and I wish that Knoxville could follow in your county's footsteps.
Thanks for all the special memories.
