The streak is on the line when Newnan battles East Coweta in big rivalry

Editorial

Newnan vs. East Coweta in high school football: It's the biggest game of the year for both teams, and it will be played 7:30 p.m. Friday at Drake Stadium on the Newnan High campus.

The game will not determine the region championship this year. Newnan, with a 9-0 record, already has clinched its fourth consecutive region title. East Coweta is 7-2 and will finish in third place in the region. Both teams will advance to the state playoffs.

While a region title is not at stake, you can bet everything else is on the line for this big rivalry game. You can toss out the records. When it's Newnan vs. East Coweta, you can bet it will be an intense battle.

The Newnan-East Coweta series has been a series of streaks. Newnan won the first game in 1992, then East Coweta won 10 straight. The Cougars ended the EC streak in 2003, and enter Friday night's game with a six-game winning streak against the Indians.

One added incentive for this week's game: If Newnan wins Friday night, it will stretch its regular season winning streak to 28 consecutive games. Who holds the Coweta County record for consecutive regular season wins? Make that East Coweta, with 28 straight wins.

Can Newnan win Friday and tie East Coweta's streak? Or will East Coweta stop the undefeated Cougars and keep the EC streak intact?

We will get the answer Friday night.

Cougars, what you did to the Indians was wrong. You placed an "N" in the middle of the field and trashed the home side. That just proved that we have more character than NHS will ever have.

Don't throw the records out the window just yet!

Toss out the records? That sounds nice and all, but I would imagine the team with the better record (favored to win) has won 90 percent of the games in the series. Perhaps someone with the numbers in front of them can back me up on that, but i don't recall too many "upsets" in this series, other than maybe the 1993 game.

Still it would be better

It would still be funnier to watch EC,Newnan, and Northgate all play each other. Have EC and Newnan play on a friday nite and then play Northgate the next day. Now that would end all the whining.
