Non-profit agencies can use volunteers during summer months

Editorial

It's summertime -- the vacation season. Already, many of us have headed out for a few days of rest and relaxation. During this Fourth of July period, and throughout July and early August, many others will be enjoying a time of vacation.

One of the fallouts of the vacation season is many non-profit organizations that depend on volunteers suffer. Volunteers go on vacation, leaving the non-profits without the people power to get their mission accomplished.

This week we reported on the need for summer volunteers at Coweta's Meals on Wheels program. The Meals on Wheels coordinator said, "I have a lot of people who travel ... I'm looking for people who can sub in the summer."

Other community non-profit organizations are in the same situation. They can use extra people power during the summer. Volunteers often are needed more than ever during this time of economic uncertainly because the need is greater and the non-profits are stretched to get their job done.

If you would like to volunteer to help the local Meals on Wheels program this summer, you can call 770-255-9443 or 770-683-8600 for more information. If you have another non-profit agency of your choice, contact that agency. Likely, it can use some volunteers during the summer months.

Try to get in touch with the local meals on wheels program for the elderly. I can remember volunteering when I was a small child with my grandmother. Often times clients enjoy visiting with the children.

In the spring I contacted various volunteer groups around town - I wanted my child to be able to volunteer too - none were interested. Small children can be taught to volunteer too!
