Take a moment

The United States of America remains the greatest country in the world for one simple reason.

It has nothing to do with the politicians du jour, the ups and downs of the stock or housing markets. It has nothing to do with how we rank in terms of GNP or education.

It is simply because of the men and women who have served in our armed forces for more than two centuries.

They have protected our freedoms and our way of life. Without them, we as a country would not exist.

Tomorrow is Memorial Day, a day we remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice defending our country, often in places the majority of us can’t spell, much less find on a map.

For too many of us, Memorial Day is just a day off from work. Banks are closed, and you won’t get any mail.

So we head off to the beach or the pool or the backyard with friends and grill steaks or whatever. We sleep in, mow the yard, just hang out.

The only reason we get to do that is because of our military. And so we suggest that at some point on Monday, you just take a pause from your extracurricular activities. Just a moment. But look up in the sky and say a silent, or even vocal if you prefer, “thank you.”

It is the least we can do.

And to those military still alive, whether active or retired, we thank you as well. 

So plant a flag and hug a vet.
