Rants, Raves & Really?!?

A look back at last week’s highs, lows and whatevers:

RANT: Billy Dedrick, a well-known and respected emergency room nurse at Piedmont Newnan Hospital, was killed in a motorcycle accident. The case is still under investigation, but his motorcycle collided with a van at the intersection of Ga. Hwy. 16 and Clearwater Lake Road. He will be sorely missed by this community.

RANT: Coweta County authorities are continuing to investigate where numerous stolen items were found inside a vehicle that wrecked after a police chase. The driver fled into the woods after crashing on Happy Valley Circle, although a female passenger was taken in for questioning. The driver was identified as Antonio Terrell Johnson, 34.

RAVE: And a big thanks to the six masonic groups that put together a large back-to-school celebration for kids. More than 500 people were fed, and bags filled with school supplies were handed out to more than 300 students from elementary to high school.

REALLY?!? Brooks Elementary School is not allowing cakes, cupcakes or cookies to be brought for birthday parties at school. School administrators said too many kids are allergic and can’t participate. Parents can still send in treats, just not food items. Judging by our Facebook page, people think either it’s a great idea or the school has lost its mind to Michelle Obama.

RAVE: A traveling photo exhibit honoring the 200 Georgians who have lost their lives in the War on Terror is in Newnan this week. Special thanks to Bill and Evonne Williams with Patriotic Productions, which created the exhibit. Cowetans are: Spc. Adrian G. Mills, Northgate High School, Kirkuk, Iraq, 29 Sept. 2011, indirect fire; Pfc. Chad Coleman, Moreland, Newnan High School, Paktiya Province, Afghanistan, Aug 2010, IED; Lance Cpl. USMC, Jeffery S. Blanton, East Coweta High School, Iraq, 12 Dec. 2004, enemy fire; PV2 Joseph Meadows, Northgate HS, Afghanistan, 16 Dec. 2008; Sgt Michael J. Stokely, Sharpsburg, Baghdad, Iraq 16 Aug 2005, explosive device, Operation Iraqi Freedom; Capt.USAF, Nicholas S. Whitlock Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, 18 Feb. 2012, support of Enduring Freedom .

RAVE: East Coweta Middle School nurse Rhonda Smits was named the state’s 2015 School Nurse of the Year by the Georgia Association of School Nurses. She is the first Coweta County nurse to win the honor. Congrats to her and all the school nurses who take care of every real and imaginary symptom from students.

RANT: Law enforcement officials are asking for help in tracking down a real man’s man. Quintez Raquan Parrott is wanted for using a baseball bat on a female victim. He also used a long pole from an upright fan and, of course, his fists. He then fled on a tricycle, oops, bicycle. Real tough guy.

RAVE: West Georgia Technical College and University of West Georgia have expanded their articulation agreements. The two-year associate degrees in business from WGTC will transfer directly to UWG. There are now three areas where associate degrees automatically transfer to four-year degrees, the other two being nursing and criminology.

REALLY?!? The director and deputy director at the Coweta County office of the Department of Family and Children’s Services are no longer with the agency. The new person in charge is Gretchen Cleveland. We are still waiting for DFCS administrators to comment on the shakeup. Stay tuned.
