Tax-free weekend is here

For a lucky few, this weekend is just like any other. Maybe a little yard work, a round of golf, just routine.

That’s because they don’t have school-aged children.

For others, namely those gearing up for a new school year that seems to start earlier and earlier, it’s time for the mad dash to complete the dreaded school supply list. And as the first day will probably be in June at the rate we’re going, so too is the supply list ever expanding.

What happened to the teacher handing out a No. 2 pencil at the start of the year? Students would bring a spiral notebook and were ready to go. Now we need colored pencils – specific colors, mind you – colored pens, a myriad of notebooks, tissues, glue, pink erasers, rubber bands, calculators, loose-leaf paper, colored paper, ruled paper, unruled paper, rulers, tape …

And let’s not forget the new backpacks to put all that stuff in. That stuff alone will probably break the backs of a few kids and that’s before they’ve even added the books.

Then there are new outfits to purchase. Not only clothes, but the proper foot attire as well. Let’s face it, no one wants to be seen as uncool and not “in.”

All of this will set us back a big chunk of change.

Fortunately, the state of Georgia has implemented a tax-free weekend – all school-related supplies, computers and clothing will be exempt from state and local sales taxes. It’s a break we all could use. And even more fortunately, the exempt weekend is before school starts.

By the time you read this, the tax-free weekend is already in effect, starting at 12:01 a.m. today. The free weekend runs through midnight Saturday. Clothing and footwear under $100 are exempt; computers and related parts and software are, too, provided they are under $1,000. School supplies under $20 also are exempt.

It won’t be a Brown Thursday or Black Friday, but there’s sure to be plenty of parents – and kids – out shopping. Just take your time and be polite. Everyone is in the same boat.
