You are never too old to learn

Next week we expect the majority of parents will be high-fiving each other.

The reason? Schools across Coweta County will be back in session.

We expect students will be happy to see their friends, show off their latest outfits and get caught up on who did what during the summer break. Which to us at least seems to be getting shorter and shorter every year. Isn’t school supposed to start after Labor Day?

We also expect that excitement will die down rather quickly as the alarm clock’s buzzing seems earlier and earlier each morning.

Not only will there be new students and old students in new schools, there will also be new teachers.

Earlier this week, the Coweta County School System welcomed 101 new teachers during its annual “new teacher orientation.” For some, it’s their first teaching assignment. Others are coming from neighboring counties and states.

We’d like to welcome them as well.

“Our vision is to ensure the success of each student,” Superintendent Dr. Steve Barker told the new teachers. “When you get up in the morning and wonder what your focus is … I want you to remember that vision.”

That is a powerful vision. And it is not easy.

Fortunately for us, Coweta County’s teachers and administrators have demonstrated time and time again that they do indeed put student success at the forefront. Consistently beating state averages on all test scores and continuing to develop innovative teaching programs are just a couple of examples.

More and more people are moving to our county, and our educational system is always a key decision point.

After a few days, we’re sure the “drudgery” of school and homework will start to show in the faces of many students. But let us remind you, the students, that the most successful people in life never stop learning.

Barker even made mention of that fact during his welcoming remarks to the teachers. “You are surrounded by expertise. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.”

Yes, students, even teachers need help. Even they don’t have all the answers. So don’t be afraid to ask either.

The old adage still holds true – you are never too old to learn.
