Rants, Raves and Really?!?

RAVE: Lots of major construction continues throughout Newnan and Coweta County. One of the biggest, the Newnan Hospital redevelopment project, remains on schedule despite rain and severe weather recently. Construction is expected to be completed in late October or early November. Classes for the University of West Georgia’s Newnan campus are slated to start January 2015.

RAVE: Dr. Kay Crosby was recognized with an 11Alive Community Service Award for her work with the Coweta Samaritan Clinic. The free clinic serves patients mostly with incomes 200 percent at the federal poverty level or below. The facility relies on volunteers, grants, donations and foundations to continue operating.

REALLY?!?: A discussion turned into an argument that soon led to one man being arrested for aggravated assault after he struck another man with his vehicle. Anthony James Rodriguez went to jail after allegedly hitting Jason Kanner, one of the owners of Ace Growlers in downtown Newnan. Rodriguez’s vehicle slightly damaged the Ace building, but severely damaged the next door shop, The Leaf and Bean. That building had some windows knocked out and the brick wall was shattered.

RANT: Child molesters are at the bottom of the food chain, even among hardcore criminals. David James Morris, 42, was sentenced to serve 25 years in prison and lifetime probation. He was convicted of aggravated child molestation, child molestation and aggravated sexual battery and had additional sentences. These people, if you could even call them that, should never see the light of day. Welcome to prison.

RAVE: Never say Cowetans don’t know how to give. About $200,000 was raised during the annual Coweta Relay for Life held at the Coweta County Fairgrounds. There were 81 teams and 822 participants. Thanks for helping kick cancer’s butt.

REALLY?!?: Bids for Coweta’s emergency medical services were about 300 percent higher than in 2011. County commissioners rightly dumped the bids and will try and negotiate with the two companies who submitted bids. They also are looking at moving EMS in-house, which might be the best way to go with these outrageous bids.

RAVE: And a thank-you to responders with the Coweta County Fire Department who rescued a man clinging to tree branches on the Chattahoochee River. The man’s boat overturned on the river and rescuers used a jet ski and life sled to pull him out of the strong current.

REALLY?!?: Sen. Mike Crane, who represents Coweta County, got a “U” for unsatisfactory on his voting record as scored by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce. A lot of people, including Crane himself, don’t care about the score. Some are even saying he should be honored.

RAVE: Northgate’s Lady Vikings soccer team and East Coweta’s Lady Indians soccer team have made it to the Final Four for their respective classifications. Let’s cheer them both on to victory. Northgate won its division last year for the state championship.
