Rants, Raves & Really?!?

A look back at last week’s highs, lows and whatevers:

REALLY?!?: A 32-year-old suspected killer was captured last week at a hotel near the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport after being on the lam for about two weeks. Irwin Clint Dresback is charged with murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in the shooting death of Jennifer Ann Gatewood, 25, of Newnan.

RAVE: Coweta County schools once more beat the state average on the latest competency tests, known as the College and Career Readiness Performance Index. The results were released by the Georgia Department of Education. Way to go, teachers and students.

RANT: One man is dead and another person is injured following some stupid argument in a vehicle that led to the car crashing into a utility pole. Michael Lee Pitman, 32, was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers said the woman driver reported Pitman grabbed the steering wheel from her and jerked it to the right, and eventually into the pole. The accident occurred early Easter morning.

REALLY?!?: Oh great. Newnan officials have confirmed a rabid raccoon discovered in a downtown Newnan neighborhood. Just a reminder, raccoons are cute, but they are also major carriers of rabies. And that’s something you absolutely do not want. If you see any animal acting odd, call animal control.

RAVE: Yet another local hero. Brent Lowery of Sharpsburg witnessed an accident on Interstate 85 involving two semi-tractor trailers, one of which overturned and caught on fire. Lowery was one of the first on the scene and helped pull the driver out before the semi exploded.

RAVE: Yet another evening of fun and food at the Taste of Newnan in downtown on Thursday. Thanks to all the vendors who participated. If you haven’t been, you are missing out on some seriously good food and fun.

REALLY?!?: Grantville has a new police dog, “Xena,” a Belgian Malinois, working with Officer William Faulkner, the city’s Officer of the Year. In her first week at work, after five weeks of training, she followed the scent of a suspect who escaped into the woods and tracked him to a nearby house.

RAVE: Coweta authorities have arrested a 15-year-old suspect in the shooting of a 17-year-old, Christopher Chase Turner. The suspect will be taken before a judge to determine whether or not he will be tried as an adult.

RANT: It’s be a year since a fire swept through a residential home, killing a mother and four children, all under the age of 6. The community held picnics and a balloon release in honor of their memory. It remains one of the worst fire accidents in the county’s history.
