Best Georgia senator prospects
Have you heard of Michelle Martin? She is running as a Democrat for U.S. Senate. Still guessing?
That's because she is running under her maiden name rather than her married name, so you will remember she is the daughter of legendary Sam Nunn. No, she is not running as Michelle Martin or Michelle Nunn-Martin, but just as Michelle Nunn.
From one website, that's the only qualification she has for running … her father's name. No political experience. No business experience. The only job she’s ever had is sort of a "hands on" community organizer. Sound familiar? Maybe after two years as a U.S. senator she also will run for president.
Let's compare her with Mrs. Karen Handel, who will run in the Republican Primary on May 20, 2014. Married name: Handel. Actual work experience: Hallmark, Ciba Vision, KMPG. Community service: President of the Greater Fulton County Chamber of Commerce. Actual political experience: Chairman of the Fulton County Board of Commissioners (2003). Georgia Secretary of State in 2006; resigned in 2009 to run for governor.
Implemented these changes as Secretary of State: Defended and implemented GA voter ID law; implemented verification of citizenship to register to vote; successfully defended this law against the ACLU and Holder’s Justice Department; launched the Transparency in Government Initiative for the GA SofS office; identified department costs and personal political and financial information; ran for Georgia governor in 2010 and narrowly lost (2,500 votes) to Deal, who smeared her with reports of gay support. Her only support for gays was to endorse domestic partnership benefits.
Handel never finished college. David Perdue, the front-runner, made sure everyone knew. Handel runs against some high-powered men: David Perdue (businessman, no political experience), Jack Kingston (businessman, GA House, 8 years; US House, 10 years) Phil Gingrey (doctor; US House, 10 years), Paul Broun (doctor; US House, 6 years), and Derrick Grayson (minister).
Personally, I'd take performance over name recognition. Handel actually accomplished something while in office. I don’t think a politically-inexperienced person (Perdue, Grayson) is a choice, and the three US reps are notable for smoke, but no fire.
