The failures of big government

The Big Government crowd often seems like they’ve just arrived from another planet where the rules of common sense don’t apply. Whether it’s the usual suspects in Washington or the pontificating left-winger around the block, they’re hard for ordinary Earthlings to figure out.

Can anyone explain how they come up with this stuff? They score political points by promoting dependency on the “State” instead of self-reliance and independence. Telling half-truths doesn’t bother them much because they believe the end justifies the means. They think only intentions matter, never actual results; for example, they’re for Obamacare whether it works or not and no matter how many people are harmed by it.

They lump people into groups and assign them fictitious rights. Individuals (especially ones they disagree with) are never among the minorities they say they support. They learn nothing from history or economics. They think emotions, slogans and bumper-stickers trump reason and logic.

Compassion is their favorite word even as they put a gun to your head and make their social schemes compulsory. They respect property only if it’s theirs. They’d rather shut you up than engage you in serious debate. When the first conservative or libertarian faculty member is hired at their university, they think it’s a hostile takeover. Their own arguments are so flimsy that they have to resort to baseless charges of “racism” or “sexism” to attack the arguments of others. They think a welfare check is an entitlement, but a paycheck isn’t.

When their policies flop, they assume no responsibility. They're always busy reforming everybody else even if their own lives are a dysfunctional mess. They criticize people and companies for not paying more in taxes than they are legally required to, yet never make any "donations" to government themselves beyond their own legal tax liability.

They dislike business less because they have sound arguments against it and more because they have no idea how to start or run one themselves. They are angry most of the time, have no sense of humor, and can't even tell a joke that's reasonably funny.

Go figure.
