Rants, Raves & Really?!?

A look back at last week’s highs, lows and whatevers:

RANT: Piedmont Newnan Hospital and Aetna/Coventry insurance are in a contract dispute. The current contract is up Jan. 31, and if something isn’t worked out, those with the company’s insurance are going to be in a world of hurt. Let’s get this resolved, please. The deadline is fast approaching.

RAVE: To all those who volunteered on MLK Jr. Day to help fellow citizens — thank you. We have an incredibly caring community and these types of events prove it.

RANT: Thirty-four people were arrested for a dog-fighting operation in Meriwether County. The event was even catered. Yes, you read that right. We could use the old saying about people like this are worse than dogs, but that would insult the canines. Y’all just lost your man card.

REALLY?!? Newnan City Council voted to look for a new vendor for the Farmers Market. Seems they didn’t like the idea of having some crafts sold along with the food. Does it really matter? Oh well, let’s hope they can find someone.

RAVE: Four men were indicted in New York City and are suspected of stealing the identities of more than 70 Coweta County residents. The men used skimmers to get financial card information from those using their cards at gas pumps. The RAVE is for the law enforcement officers and their hard work. And we will just get out a big old RANT to the suspects, whose names are impossible to try to spell. Maybe they should be thrown in a dog pit.

REALLY?!? A Coweta County grand jury returned 391 indictments against people for 289 cases. Prosecutors said they are on track to prosecute a record number of criminal cases this year. Thanks to our law enforcement for catching these suspects. Yet, on the other hand, this many indictments means crime is dramatically increasing here. We are no longer a sleepy little town.

RAVE: Yokogawa Corporation of America held a groundbreaking for a new 60,000-square-foot distribution center that will employ 215 new workers. Thank you, thank you for your investment in our community.

RANT: A 60-year-old was arrested for allegedly selling prescription painkillers to high school students. Investigators found more than 600 painkiller capsules after serving a search warrant on the home of Royce Watson. Selling drugs to kids. Where’s that dog pit we talked about earlier.

REALLY?!? A big fundraiser at Newnan High School was canceled because of an inappropriate question asked on a student survey. The question asked whether the respondent liked the other sex, the same sex or both. Another question asked whether the respondent was male, female or other. This is not a joke and that kind of information is no one’s business. Hats off to Principal Chase Puckett for confiscating all the surveys and ending this little escapade.
