Back to the circus

Well that didn’t take long.

We figured having a big shakeup — two new council members coming in and two departing — would change things for the better. But that would be a “no.”

Let’s see. In the first meeting of the new year a citizen is forcibly removed by police. And even better — the racism card was finally thrown down.

Are we talking about Grantville? That would be a “yes.”

Seriously, guys? Not even one meeting without everyone attacking everyone else?

There were two hot topics. One was the decision to do away with the Recreation Committee and hire a professional recreation director. That motion passed, with new council members David Riley and Leonard Gomez voting in favor and Johnny Cooks and Barham Lundy voted against. Mayor Jim Sells cast the tie-breaking vote to dissolve the board. The second issue was over extending water lines into Meriwether County. That measure was passed by the previous council, but was overturned with the new council voting the exact same way.

For those who missed the story, here are just a few of the more colorful quotes:

“I guess this is now the Third Reich or something.” (Said by Cooks.) “I saw him (Riley) speak before this council. If we’re going to a discussion on people being inept, maybe we should use him as an example.” (Said by Cooks.)

“I’ve got something to say here before we take this vote. It’s probably going to hurt me, but I don’t care. I think this is race-related and I’m through with it. it’s race-related.” (Said by Lundy.) “I agree with you.” (Said by Cooks.) Lundy and Cooks are African-American.

“Mr. Lundy, when you speak, I allow you to finish. It is rude and downright disrespectful to interrupt when you don’t like what I’m saying.” (Said by Sells.) “You know, were getting to the real reason the incumbents are gone. The rudeness and disrespectful behavior of elected officials by one who used to sit next to me.” (Said by Sells.) “Yes, patron.” (Said by Lundy.)

We think you get the point.

Last year, producers announced they would be filming scenes of “Dumb and Dumber 2” in Grantville. There were a lot of chuckles over that one because the city council’s antics last year pretty much fit that title.

To the council members: it’s a new year. How about we try being a little more civil, drop the race card and do what is best for your town? We really don’t need a repeat of 2013.
