Rants, Raves & Really?!?

A look back at last week’s highs, lows and whatevers:

REALLY?!? John Gortner, who was pulled from a burning home, unfortunately later died of his injuries. But the weird part is another man, Karl Becker, was arrested on multiple obstruction charges for fighting with firefighters and trying to kick out a sheriff’s deputy’s patrol car windows during the incident.

RAVE: The Lights for Linda Christmas Eve luminary fundraiser pulled in more than $4,000 during the season. All proceeds go the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. To date, the project, where luminaries are lit Christmas Eve, has raised more than $10,000 in its four-year history.

RANT: In yet another tragedy, 19-year-old Richmond “Richie” Steele died from injuries he received after his vehicle was struck by a train.

RANT: More than 30 people were arrested for shoplifting during the holiday season. Of course, many of those arrested have been charged with the same crime previously. Obviously, they are not very good criminals. No one wins, they go to jail, and we pay higher prices.

RAVE: Megan Winters, an 11-year-old at Brooks Elementary, was rescued from a well she fell into at her grandparent’s property in Whitesburg. Megan was stuck for more than an hour before Carroll County Fire and Rescue personnel were able to pull her out.

RANT: The Georgia Department of Community Health denied a Certificate of Need for a behavioral hospital in Newnan. The closest such facility is more than 30 miles away. Yeah, we’ll have more on this later.

REALLY?!? The dead come back to life. In a national story, presumed dead banker Aubrey Lee Price was busted during a traffic stop on New Year’s Eve in Glynn County. He is alleged to have taken some $17 million of investors’ money and later disappearing.

RANT: Wonder what this guy was thinking? A driver approaches a license checkpoint. Deputies come up, he hits the gas. And yes, deputies are soon giving chase. After hitting speeds of up to 100 mph, Darrius Navour Herring, 33, crashed head-on into a utility pole. He then jumped out of the car and tried to run away. Key word being “tried.” Yes, he’s facing multiple charges.

REALLY?!? Yep, it’s cold. Even the public school system shut classes down for two days. But somehow we think those up north are sort of laughing at us.
