Rants, Raves & Really?!?

A look back at last week’s highs, lows and whatevers:

RAVE: Grantville City Council met, but you really didn’t think we could give them a rave, did you? No. Instead the RAVE is for the police department and citizens who are standing behind their chief despite one council member trying to stir up trouble.

REALLY: Qualifying for local elections is over. No one is running against Newnan City Council incumbents Ray DuBose, Rhodes Shell and Mayor Keith Brady. We’d like to think that’s because the citizens of Newnan like how things are going. Either that or the incumbents have some massive campaign chests. But we’ll go with the former.

RAVE: To Jaclyn Jerrell, a student at Chamberlain College of Nursing, who just visited Honduras and provided medical care for people living in a landfill. The story of how these people live is heartbreaking, but thanks to her and the countless other volunteers from this area who help those less fortunate.

RAVE: There’s been a lot of raves about those who saw the screening here of “Three Days at Foster,” the true story about the integration of sports at the University of Alabama. Go pick up a copy.

RANT: Scammers are out after the elderly again. This time Georgia Power says the scum are pretending to be company employees and telling residents they are facing penalties for missing payments. If the residents don’t pay over the phone right then, the scammers say their electricity will be cut off. People like this who prey on the elderly need to be beaten with a stick.

RAVE: Three more people recently graduated from the Coweta County Drug Court program. It’s an intensive program that can take at least 18 months to complete. The program targets those convicted of non-violent crimes to overcome their drug addiction. This is an incredibly-successful program and we salute those who make it happen, and more importantly, the graduates who succeed.

RANT: Six people — all under the age of 21 — were arrested for selling drugs around Coweta County, including to area high school students.

RAVE to the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office, which has been working the case for more than three months.

RANT: Three Evans Middle School students were busted for manufacturing, distribution and possession of an illegal substance. To make it worse, the suspected marijuana was actually pencil shavings dyed green. This is no way to go through life, kids.

REALLY: Life lesson: never try to break up a fight between your girlfriend and ex-girlfriend. But one unlucky guy tried just that and ended up in the hospital, partly because he got hit where guys really don’t like to be.

RAVE: There are some awesome students out there. Case in point — Brandon Tennie, a senior football player for Newnan High School. His foundation, Blessings and Dreams Coming Together, recently held a Back to School Giveaway that provided free backpacks and school supplies to more than 100 kids. We salute you, young man.

RAVE: East Coweta High School and the Coweta Science Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Consortium are finalists for the annual STEM Education Awards. East Coweta was named as one of the six finalists for best STEM high school in Georgia.
