Rants, Raves & Really?!?

RAVE: Our Friday nights are set. It’s high school football time. With six great local teams to choose from, it’s time someone takes the state title.

RANT: Driving drunk is bad enough. Being so drunk you refuse a roadside sobriety test because you tell deputies you are too drunk is no way to go through life, sir. But that’s exactly what happened recently to a driver caught swerving on Bullsboro Drive and later Interstate 85.

RANT: Two women decided to help themselves to various credit and debit cards from employees working near the Summit Health complex. They ended up spending thousands of dollars at various stores throughout Ashley Park. We’ve run photos from security cameras. If you see them, please call the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office.

REALLY? The Coweta County commissioners went on a rezoning denial safari last week. Among those rejected included a 224-unit upscale apartment complex; a continuing care retirement community; a special events permit for property near Chandler and Smokey roads; and a private flying club. However, they did approve a 6,000-square-foot kennel. So the commissioners like dogs, are afraid of flying and don’t like apartment living. We have a feeling a couple of these aren’t over yet.

RAVE: City of Newnan workers installed a street sign — Boomer Lane — in honor of Danny “Boomer” Bishop. It runs along the paved path that leads off Armory Road to Joe Pope Baseball Field and Drake Stadium. An incredibly moving tribute to Newnan’s biggest sports fan, who died earlier this year.

RANT: Shots were fired during a robbery of a grocery and convenience store on Turkey Creek Road. After leaving, one of the suspects fired a gun at a vehicle driven by a family member of the store owner. The car was hit twice, including the windshield, but fortunately no one was hurt.

RAVE: Coweta’s unemployment rate was the lowest among surrounding counties for July. It’s still not where we want it — 8.4 — but it’s well below the 11.1 percent for the Three Rivers planning region.

RANT: Must have been a full moon last week. Yet another debit scam, this time callers pretending to be with the sheriff’s office telling elderly residents they hadn’t shown up for jury duty and need to pay a fine. We tell our kids not to talk to strangers — same goes for anyone soliciting financial information over the phone.

RAVE: We welcome Courtney Collins, the new Main Street Newnan program manager. You could not have picked a better downtown.

RAVE: Save the date — groundbreaking for the new University of West Georgia Newnan campus is set for Sept. 9. What a tremendous asset for the entire county and surrounding area.

RAVE: The city of Newnan’s fire rating has improved, meaning home insurance rates should go down. Coweta County also saw its rating go down — another example of local government using tax dollars wisely.

RAVE: To the nearly 30 volunteers who pulled 560 pounds of trash out of the Chattahoochee River this past weekend: Thank you for your efforts.
