Let's learn to fish

You have probably heard the old saying “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.”
I have striven my entire adult life to live by that axiom, and it seemed like a lot of others in my generation attempted to do the same. By passing on skills that we have learned, we are able to help others learn to do tasks for themselves and earn a living. Taking responsibility for one’s self was once a trait that was not only taught by our parents but also “caught” from them as well as we watched them respond to their circumstances.
However, more and more it seems like society today is avoiding the responsibility for themselves and how they react to their circumstances. By and large, our society seems to be saying this: “Fishing is too hard. Just give me my fish every day and I’ll be fine.”
What they don’t realize is that when fewer and fewer people are “fishing,” then there are fewer and fewer fish to go around.
We need to get back to the place where each person in America (and elsewhere around the world, too) develops the inner strength to have a sense of responsibility for themselves, to be willing to learn to “fish” and thus provide for themselves and their families instead of being dependent on the government (federal or state).
