Coweta County residents should appreciate our well-run school system
If you ride through neighboring Fayette County these days, you will likely see signs along the roadside urging the Fayette County Board of Education to keep all the county’s schools open.The Fayette school board is looking for ways to address a $15 million education budget shortfall, and the board is considering closing four Fayette schools -- Tyrone Elementary, Brooks Elementary, Fayette Middle School and Fayetteville Intermediate School.
Anytime you talk about closing schools, you are going to ruffle feathers. That’s happened with some parents in Fayette who want their neighborhood schools to remain open.
The first of two hearings on the plan is scheduled for today in Fayetteville. The second hearing will be Feb. 25. Big crowds are expected.
Sure, Coweta schools are wrestling with concerns about a tight budget. Coweta schools have endured state budget cuts in education in recent years like other schools system. But we are not talking about closing schools.
The Coweta school board has delayed construction of a new middle school. The school could be built with ESPLOST money, but the concern is regarding operating expenses when the new school is open. ESPLOST money can’t be used for operating costs.
We applaud the Coweta school board, superintendent and administrators for the conservative financial approach they take in running our local schools. Our schools can get better, but we have a well-run school system in this community.
