Coweta's interstate better than most

If you travel the Georgia interstate highway system throughout metro Atlanta, you will soon realize that the stretch of Interstate 85 that runs through the middle of Coweta County from near mile marker 56 at the south Fulton County line to near mile marker 34 and the Meriwether County line is one of the best stretches of interstate in the entire metro area.
We lived through more than three years of construction work on I-85 in Coweta during the past decade. While that long construction period was a dangerous hassle for motorists, the finished product was worth the wait.
Today we have four lanes of interstate highway in each direction in much of Coweta and three lanes in each direction in other parts of the county.
That’s much better than some parts of the congested metro Atlanta area. One of the worst interstate highway stretches in the metro area is the stretch of I-85 in Gwinnett County from the intersection of I-285 north past the Mall of Georgia area. Much of that roadway has two lanes in each direction and there are often congestion nightmares in the area.
Another reason Coweta should be so proud of its relatively new interstate is the smooth ride. There are miles and miles of interstate highways in the metro region that are filled with potholes. Drive I-285 west from its intersection with I-85 near the airport and you will experience one of the roughest rides anywhere on the interstates in our area.
That stretch of I-285 driving past Camp Creek Parkway, Cascade Road, I-20 West, Hollowill Parkway, Bolton Road, South Cobb Drive and South Atlanta Road is crumbling. Currently there’s repaving work on I-285 from Paces Ferry Road to the Ashford Dunwoody (Perimeter Mall) area. When that work is completed in August 2013, we would hope there’s money to improve the terribly bumpy stretch previously mentioned.

There are other much-needed interstate construction projects in metro Atlanta that will need attention in the months and years ahead. We are indeed fortunate that here in Coweta County we have a revitalized, widened I-85 that is better than many other stretches of interstate in the metro area.
