Newnan vs. East Coweta – today is game day

Newnan vs. East Coweta — say those words this time of the year and everyone knows you are talking about the big game. It’s the annual football rivalry game between the two Coweta high schools, and it kicks off at 7:30 tonight in Garland Shoemake Stadium on the East Coweta campus.
As is usually the case, both teams will be heading to the state playoffs after the game. The winner of tonight’s battle will secure home field advantage in at least the first round of the playoffs. The loser tonight will be on the road for the opening playoff game.
In addition to the playoff ramifications, this game is for bragging rights in the community for the next year and much more.
Newnan Coach Mike McDonald said, “It’s a big game. It always is. It usually means something. Not just bragging rights. This year it decides whether you stay home or go on the road for the first round of the playoffs.
Said East Coweta Coach Clint Wade, “This game ... it’s a little different. It’ll put a lot of cotton in your mouth. They’ll be times you’ll feel like it’s hard to get a breath. But that’s what this game’s about.”
These two schools have a long winning football tradition. Both have had a history of great players, great coaches, great fans and tremendous support throughout the community.
Newnan has a better overall record this season and is eager to get revenge for allowing East Coweta to come back from a 19-0 deficit last year and defeat the Cougars 28-25.

East Coweta is looking to build on last year’s victory and earn the home field advantage in the playoffs.

It’s game day. The two teams are ready to do battle. Let the showdown begin.
