Thanks to Kiwanis, we still have a first class county fair

At 5 p.m. today gates swing open for the first day of the annual 10-day Coweta County Fair, organized by the Newnan Kiwanis Club, and held at the fairgrounds off Pine Road south of Newnan.
The fair continues each day through Sept. 29. On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, the fair will be open from 5-11 p.m., on Fridays from 5 p.m.-midnight, on Saturdays from noon to midnight, and on Sunday from 2-10 p.m.
The Coweta County Fair has been sponsored every year but one since 1947 by the local Kiwanis Club. It’s a 10-day extravaganza geared toward the family. There is the midway, the food, the exhibits and demonstrations, entertainment and much, much more.
We always get excited about the fair because of what it means to the community after the event closes. Kiwanis has been so generous through the years in returning its profits from the fair back to the community.
There are about 35 non-profit agencies that receive grants from Kiwanis. That clearly shows the generosity and foresight of the club in helping our community.
In addition to these many annual grants -- which far exceed a total of $100,000 a year -- the Kiwanis Club bought the 36 acres where the fairground is located and donated the land for the modern fairground, a showcase for our county.
On the fair website it is stated Kiwanis plans to buy more land for additional parking at the fair site.
In the past two to three decades many county and regional fairs have diminished in size or completely faded away. That has not been the case with the Coweta County Fair. Because of the commitment of Kiwanis and others, our community continues to have a first-class county fair. Enjoy.
