147-year-old newspaper adapting to change

It’s Sept. 9, 1865 -- just five months after the end of the Civil War. On that date the first edition of The Newnan Herald is printed. The newspaper is billed on the front page as “a weekly journal devoted to politics, news, agriculture, commerce, etc.”
Flash forward 147 years.
Today, The Newnan Times-Herald celebrates the newspaper’s 147 anniversary. Included in today’s edition is a special section chronicling the history and what’s happened with the newspaper during its long history of serving readers and advertisers in Coweta County.
Much has changed in the newspaper business in 147 years. One of the biggest changes through the years -- and particularly in the past 40 years -- has been advances in technology. That change continues today.
Advances in technology and social media opportunities have created great change for newspapers. That change presents challenges for newspapers. It also presents opportunities. All newspapers today are adapting to advances in technology as they try to make their products accessible to readers in a variety of formats.
Here at The Newnan Times-Herald, we offer the traditional print edition and an electronic digital edition each day Wednesday-Sunday. We have a website -- times-herald.com -- that offers a portion of the content from the print and digital editions. We are on Facebook and Twitter seeking to reach those who are involved in those media.
As we note the newspaper’s birthday today, we look forward to continuing to serve our readers and our advertisers in the future. We will continue to adapt to change. We thank everyone who reads The Newnan Times-Herald and all the advertisers who use the newspaper to spread their message to customers in Coweta County.
Our goal is to be the number one source of local news, advertising and information about the people, places and things in Coweta County. We have a long history of meeting that goal and look forward to serving this community in the future.
