It's September, and the sports calendar is full

It’s September. The Labor Day weekend is behind us, and the summer travel season has concluded for most of us. As we get ready for fall and somewhat cooler weather, all sports fans are in a tizzy. It’s one of the busiest time of the year for sports junkies.
Much of the excitement is for football season. Football has been called a religion in parts of the South. Already our high school teams have been in action for a couple of weeks. The college teams started a week ago. This weekend the professional football season has its first games of the regular season. Plus there are youth football and soccer leagues. And high school volleyball and softball capture the attention of many players and fans.
With all the excitement about football and the other local sports, there’s still major league baseball on the calendar. Major League teams -- including our Atlanta Braves -- are battling throughout September, hoping for a chance to play in October when the playoffs and World Series are scheduled.
There’s more. During the last weekend in September one of the bigger professional golf tournaments of the year will be played at the East Lake course in Atlanta. It’s the Tour Championship, when the top golfers in the world will compete for the FedEx Cup.
This tournament is a big deal for golf fans, but it’s smaller potatoes when compared to football -- where just about everyone gets excited.
Whatever your sporting interest, enjoy the season. Root for you favorite team, or teams.
