Distracted drivers significant problem on our roadways
A distracted driver can be a safety hazard because distracted drivers cause accidents. We all know the scenario about texting while driving. The situation became so alarming that Georgia lawmakers passed legislation outlawing texting while driving.Despite that law, we still regularly see drivers on our roadways ignoring the law and merrily sending text messages on their cell phones while driving. Texting and cell phone usage are just two of many distractions for drivers. And some people in our community want us to do more to call attention to the problem of distracted drivers.
A Newnan couple sent us an email with a Sound Off comment: “Driver on Roscoe Road doing hair and makeup weaving with two children in car seats in the back seat of car. Accident waiting to happen.”
The email claimed this driver had been seen on other occasions doing things while behind the wheel that were significant distractions and hazardous.
“This is news and important to the community ... I just wish your paper would do a community service report on texting, etc., and the implications that could happen with this type of behavior ... Be proactive to the community.”
We certainly agree that distracted drivers can be a safety hazard. They should be reported to authorities. Public awareness of this issue does need to be raised.
Just as important: We all need to be more responsible when we are driving — stay off the phone, don’t text, don’t put on makeup or do other tasks that distract you from driving. Your life is at stake, as is the lives of those in your vehicle and those in other vehicles or along the roadway where you are traveling.
P.S.: If you see distracted drivers, send us a comment to Sound Off. We will attempt to do more to call attention to this ongoing problem.
