It's a dream come true for native of Newnan

Dreams come true. If you don’t believe that, ask Newnan native Will Smith, the former Northgate High School ace pitcher.
A week ago, Smith, who had been in the Kansas City Royals’ minor league system, was called up to the big league Royals team. His first game as a starting pitcher for the Royals was against what is considered the greatest professional sports franchise in history — the New York Yankees.
That’s a dream assignment right there. How many youngsters have dreamed of playing Major League Baseball and either playing with or playing against the famed New York Yankees? That first game was not a winner for Smith. He gave up two home runs to future Hall of Famer Alex Rodriguez in the loss.
Tuesday night, the dream continued.
Smith was the starting pitcher when the Royals played the Cleveland Indians. He pitched six solid innings, and his Royals teammates’ bats came alive. The Royals and Smith won 8-2. The Newnan native recorded his first Major League victory.
An excited Smith and his teammates celebrated the victory, and after the win Smith summed up his feelings: “It’s just awesome ... an amazing feeling. You think of what it will be like your whole life. Just getting to the big leagues, and then to win? It’s a dream come true.”
Indeed, Will Smith is living his dream -- a dream that millions of young people have envisioned through the years. Not many have that big league baseball dream come true. That’s why this past week has been so special for Smith, for his family, and for his many fans and friends.
Our entire community is pulling for Smith. We hope this is the first of many Major League victories for this young man. Enjoy the moment, Will Smith. Dreams do come true. We hope you continue living the dream and enjoy big league success for many years.
