Mrs. Barbara Burdette Williams

Obituary

Mrs. Barbara Burdette Williams, 78, of Woodbine Circle, Newnan, GA, passed away July 3, 2009. Mrs. Williams was born March 15, 1931, in Washington, GA, to the late Walter Edward Burdette Sr. & Annie Laurie Drinkard Burdette. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, W. Walter Williams III.

Following graduation from Washington High School, she attended Bessie Tift College and graduated in 1952 with an AB Degree. She also did graduate study at The University of Georgia and West Georgia College. She came to Newnan in 1952 to teach school, and in 1954 she married Bill Williams, her husband of 55 years.

Mrs. Williams was a devoted member of Central Baptist Church, where she served in the children's department and also played the piano for their singing. She was a former member of the Newnan Hospital Auxiliary, the Newnan Junior Service League and the Driftwood Garden Club.

She not only was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who was admired by her family and friends, but also a dedicated school teacher who was named teacher of the year of the Grantville Brown School in 1992. In 1966, she and her husband took 16 high school students on an enjoyable three week tour of Europe.

Surviving family members include her husband, W.W. Williams Jr.; daughters & sons-in-law, Rev. Ann Burdette Williams & Rev. Paul David Steinke of Brooklyn, NY, Jane Kelly Williams & David Thomas Richards of Tenafly, NJ.

Other surviving family members are a granddaughter, Willa Kate Richards; and step-grandchildren, David Steinke and his wife, Lauren, and their children, Bayla and Jacob, Jonathan Steinke and his wife, Nicole, and their son Theo, Darcy Steinke and her husband, Mike Hudson, and her daughter, Abby Hornburg.

Mrs. Williams' sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Forest Clinton Castellaw of Lenoia, NC; brother & sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Edward Burdette Jr. of Washington, GA; sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Harvey Edwards of Washington, GA; sister & brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Strother of Washington, GA. In addition there are numerous beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral service is Monday, July 6 at 2 p.m. at the graveside in Rest Haven Cemetery in Washington, GA, with Dr. Joel Richardson officiating. The visitation is Sunday, July 5 between 5 & 7 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson St., Newnan, GA. The family respectfully requests that neither flowers be sent nor contributions made. Instead, cards of condolences can be mailed to the family at 38 Jackson St, Newnan, GA 30263.
