James Riley Johnson

Obituary

James Riley Johnson, 76, died on Sept. 27, 2008 at home in Newnan, Ga. after an extended illness. He was surrounded by his family and close friends. He was born in Barwick, Ga. on Oct. 31, 1931 to the late Wilson Riley and Inez Toole Johnson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Anna Farquhar. They were a proud pioneering family of Brooks and Lowndes Counties in Georgia.

He was in the Navy and served during the Korean War between 1951-1955. He attended Southern Tech and Georgia Tech from 1955-1958. He was a small business owner and entrepreneur in the precast concrete business until he retired. Being a humanitarian, he gave to Compassion International, Samaritan's Purse, and World Medical Missions. He was a former Kiwanian with the Kiwanis Club, and was an active member of Heatherwood Baptist Church where he was involved with the Master Sons Sunday school class. He will be remembered as a totally devoted husband, father and granddad with a gift of quiet servanthood.

The visitation is Monday, Sept. 29, 2008 between 6-8 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson Street, Newnan, Ga. 30263. The funeral is Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Heatherwood Baptist Church with Pastor Tom Daugherty officiating. Members of the Heatherwood Baptist Church Master Sons Sunday school class will serve as pallbearers. Interment will be at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia. Flowers are welcome or memorial contributions may be made to Heatherwood Baptist Church Building Fund, 721 Shenandoah Blvd, Newnan, Ga. 30265. Condolences may be expressed online at www.mckoon.com

He is survived by wife Peggy King Johnson of Newnan; daughters Beverly Jan Riddle and her husband Robert of Atlanta, Cynthia Jill Phillips and her husband David of Cumming, Jodi Frances Shearin and her husband Henry of Woodstock; and grandchildren Christian, Tyler, Eric, Caroline, Kaitlyn, Riley and Julia.
