Chaplain (LTC) Retired Thomas Edward Hines, Jr.

Reverend Thomas Hines Jr. passed on June 5, 2013. Funeral services will be held 3:30 p.m. Monday, June 10, at Roosevelt Hall Memorial Auditorium in Warm Springs, GA, with Rev. Eugene Wiseman officiating. Interment will be in Grantville City Cemetery.

Chaplain (LTC) Retired Thomas Edward Hines Jr. was the first born son of Thomas E. Hines Sr. and Louise Hill Hines in Grantville, GA. He was called to the ministry at 13 years of age. Rev. Hines was a United Methodist Minister and pastored several churches in Georgia before joining the U.S. Army. A real go-getter, Thomas completed a Doctor of Ministry Degree from Vanderbilt University while serving as a Chaplain for 21 years in the United States Army. His military service included a tour of duty in Vietnam. He lovingly provided basic needs, as well as fun for his family as they traveled extensively in America and abroad, which included living in Fairbanks, Alaska, for 2.5 years and 3 years in Frankfurt, Germany. Other duties include working as counselor in the Georgia State Prison System, and as counselor and chaplain at Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation.

His philosophy of “Fix it or tear it up” meant turning across the Autobahn in Europe, backing up I-95 in D.C., and stopping in the middle of the battery area of Manhattan, NY, to retrieve a hubcap, which led to much shock and laughter for the family. His idea of ice removal in Alaska was gasoline and a match. He built a picnic set that looked like wooden wheelchairs and a storm shelter out of a septic tank. He also made a storage shed from doors, and others never knew which door to choose. His homemade rolls, delicious BBQ and patented pickled everything resulted in being the talk of many. He was a lover of music who purchased many instruments – never learning how to play them!

He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 52 years, Peggy; his three children, Trina Hines Nesbitt (Garvin), Thomas E. Hines III (Julie), and Mari Hines Early (Kevin); and seven grandchildren. He will be missed by his devoted mother, Mrs. Louise Hill Hines; four sisters and two brothers. He was truly one-of-a-kind and will be missed by the countless lives he touched in and outside his ministry.

Family will receive friends on Sunday from 4 until 7 p.m. at John Wesley United Methodist Church, Grantville, Georgia. Final arrangements have been entrusted to Sellers-Smith Funeral Home, Inc., Newnan; 770-253-1607, www.sellerssmithfh.com.
