Mrs. Grace Stallings Powell

Ms. Grace Stallings Powell passed gently from her earthly life on Sunday, March 12, 2013. 

She was born September 22, 1923, to the late Carl Monroe Stallings Sr. and Ruth Evans Stallings in Griffin, Georgia. 

She graduated from Spalding High School in 1940 and entered nursing school at Crawford W. Long Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, graduating in 1943 with her RN degree. She served with the Army Nurse Corps in Memphis, Tennessee, after she graduated until 1946, when she took a nursing position at Newnan Hospital in Newnan, Georgia.

In 1952, she married Newnan native Asa M. Powell Sr. In 1962, Grace transferred to the new Coweta General Hospital in Newnan and was on staff there until her retirement in 1985. She was a longtime member of Central Baptist Church in Newnan. She enjoyed her involvement with the J.O.Y. Sunday School class and the Mary Glover Nixon Baptist Women's group. She served as secretary/ treasurer for both of these groups for many years. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Asa Mitchell Powell Sr., her son, Asa Mitchell Powell Jr., daughter-in-law, Anne Quinn Powell and her brother, Carl M. Stallings Jr. She is survived by one daughter, Grace Powell Freeman and her husband, Bob Freeman and two grandsons, Robert Powell Freeman and Lewis Edward Freeman.

She was loved and cared for during her last year of life by a group of dedicated caregivers that included Jackie Bridges, Dottie Edwards, Velma Gulick, Sue Harris and Virginia Orr.

Services will be at McKoon Funeral Home at 38 Jackson Street in Newnan on Wednesday, May 15, at 2 p.m. with Dr. Joel E. Richardson officiating. The family will have visitation two hours prior to the service beginning at noon at the funeral home. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
