Mr. William 'Bill' Lawrence Martinell

Mr. William "Bill" Lawrence Martinell, age 90, passed away at his home April 26, 2013. He was born Oct. 16, 1922, in Savanna, Illinois.

Bill was enlisted with the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1946. Bill graduated from Georgia Tech in 1947 with a degree in Industrial Management. He was named one of the 10 outstanding students and was president of the Newman Club, a Catholic men's club at Georgia Tech. He was employed with Southern Wood Preserving Company for 33 years, in East Point, GA, and Spartanburg, SC, advancing from trainee to president. He was a member of the Rotary Club from 1960 to 1989. He received many honors during his employment including Life Member of the American Wood Preservers Association, president of the Railway Tie Association & president of the Forest Product Research Association. In 1980 Bill worked as president and CEO of JH Baxter & Co. in San Mateo, California, and retired in 1989.

Bill was preceded in death by his mother, Mary, his father, Laurence, and brother, Robert.

He was a wonderful father and devoted husband. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Joan Croker Martinell of Newnan; daughter, Laura Lynn Wilson, daughter and son-in-law, Patty and John Baker, daughter and son-in-law Karen and Herb Emory, son and daughter-in-law William and Sherry Martinell, daughter Robyn Adams; grandchildren, Ryan Wilson, Russell Baker (Kate), Matthew Baker, Bryan Baker, Patrick Baker and Tayler Schnoor.

Bill was a good and faithful servant to the Lord, a devout Catholic, earning the honor of Fourth Degree with the Knights of Columbus. His strong faith and gentle spirit extended beyond his family to all who knew him. He was a member of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church.

A visitation was held Monday, April 29, from 6-8 pm, at McKoon Funeral Home, Newnan, GA.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 30, 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Newnan, GA. A reception will follow. Father Dan Fleming will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church, 3 Village Rd., Newnan, GA 30265.
