Mr. William H. Morris

Mr. William H. Morris, age 89, died April 25, 2013, at his home. A native of Coweta County, he was the youngest of ten children born to Noah Morris Sr. and Besse Howard Morris.

All of his siblings, 4 brothers and 5 sisters, preceded him in death.

William was a man of great compassion — not only for his family, but for all he came to know. He was unflinching in his dedication to the God who created him. He was a steadfast presence at his beloved First Christian Church and never passed up an opportunity to be involved in its activities and invite others as well.

Of great importance to William was the time he gave to the defense of his country during World War II. He was a tank gunner. His battalion landed on Omaha Beach in 1944 and saw action in five major battles. He saw 299 days of actual combat and was the first to admit that it was only by the grace of God that he was able to return home safely in 1945. After returning from the war he worked ten years for the railroad and later worked for the Coweta County Corrections department. In June 1955, he became the husband of Virginia Payton.

Their married years would be filled with children, grandchildren, baseball (lots of that), country music (especially Connie Smith), and tinkering with cars and lawnmowers. William loved life, family and friends. Caring for others came naturally to him and he was a regular blood donor as he donated 23 gallons throughout his life.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Payton Morris; his children, Dianne (and Greg) Ferrell, Jimmy (and Marsha) Morris and Scott Morris. He was cherished by his grandchildren, Kati, Cassie, Claire, Jana (Bo White), and Kristin and great-granddaughter, Bella.

The funeral service will be on Sunday, April 28 at 2 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home with Reverend Clay Henry, Reverend Gary Boyd officiating. A eulogy will be given by Randy Cox. Visitation will be on Saturday evening between 6 and 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery. Those who may so desire may make memorial contributions in Mr. Morris’ name to First Christian Church, 8 Elm Street Newnan, GA 30263.
