Mr. Thomas Lawson Hughie
Mr. Thomas Lawson Hughie, known to everyone as Lawson, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Dec. 21, 2013, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He died peacefully with his family by his side.
Lawson was born on Jan. 24, 1943, to the late Dorothy B. and Henry L. Hughie. He was a 1961 graduate of East Coweta High School. Having won a scholarship to attend the University of Georgia, he instead chose to run the family dairy farm. This he did until 1982.
On Oct. 27, 1961, he married his high school sweetheart, the former Mary Elizabeth O'Brien, whom he called Liz. Into this union were born a son and a daughter.
Lawson was a member of Raymond Baptist Church since 1953, but he had been attending East Newnan Baptist Church for the past 12 years.
His hobbies included NASCAR racing, playing pool on an APA league, working in his hay fields, going on cruises, and dancing with Liz. The love of his life, however, was his family.
Besides being predeceased by his parents, he was also predeceased by his father-in-law, James (Bud) O'Brien; and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Margaret and Tommy Tittle.
He is survived by his wife, Liz; son, Jim (Judy) Hughie; daughter, Kim (Craig Sinclair); grandchildren, Beth, Kayla, and Tyler Hughie; a special young lady whom he also considered to be a granddaughter, Audra Bellam; mother-in-law, Johnnie O'Brien; nephews, Ken and Tim (Michelle) Tittle; great-niece, Jena Tittle; great nephew, Dylan Tittle; aunt, Jean Hughie, and a number of cousins one of whom became very close to him during his illness Lynn (Billy) Cawthorne, and his special nurse Rebecca. Visiting hours were held at McKoon Funeral Home on Monday, Dec. 23, from 9:30 -11 a.m. with services immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, Lawson had requested that donations be made in his honor to East Newnan Baptist Church Building Fund, 577 East Gordon Road, Newnan, GA 30263. It was Lawson's desire to be cremated. Online condolences may be expressed at www.mckoon.com .
