Mr. Roy L. Matthews Jr.
Mr. Roy L. Matthews Jr., 75, of Newnan, GA, passed away Feb. 13, 2013.
Roy was born May 13, 1937, in Macon, GA, to the late Roy Lee Matthews & Margaret Lyon Matthews. Roy graduated from Lanier High School and attended Mercer University in Macon. He married Elsie Bray on Sept. 8, 1958, and together they raised three children. In December 1958 Roy began his 36-year career with the United States Postal Service, and became a Postal Inspector in 1961. He loved his job as an inspector and served in Macon, GA, Gadsden, AL, Chattanooga, TN, and Atlanta, GA, retiring in 1994. In retirement, Roy served the Atlanta Postal Credit Union for 10 years as a member of the Supervisory Committee and later as a member of the Board of Directors.
Roy was a longtime, faithful member of Peachtree City First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and Head Usher, a position he cherished. He enjoyed all outdoor activities, especially gardening, fishing, and hunting. He loved the fellow members of his hunting club, where he built a small cabin and enjoyed spending time there.
Roy will be remembered by his many friends for his sense of humor and quick wit. He really loved living on Lake Redwine during retirement and enjoyed sharing his usually abundant supply of tomatoes with friends and neighbors. One of his greatest sources of pride was his children and six grandchildren. He enjoyed attending their activities and sharing their accomplishments with his many friends.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Elsie Bray Matthews of Newnan; sister, Margaret Ann (Jim) Cosman of Woodbine, GA; his children, Roy Lee (Marne) Matthews, III of Athens, Merri Cheryl (Forrest) Cate of Chattanooga, and John Steven (Dawn) Matthews of Baton Rouge; grandchildren, McKay Matthews, Forrest Cate IV, Matthew Cate, Anna Cate, John Steven Matthews, Jr., Katie Matthews; and many nieces and nephews.
