A Newnan woman was airlifted to an Atlanta hospital Friday with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest, according to Major James Yarbrough of the Coweta County Sheriff's Office.
Yarbrough said a 54-year-old Newnan woman apparently drove from her home to the Cokes Chapel United Methodist Church on Lower Fayetteville Road shortly before 7 p.m. Friday. The woman parked in the church lot, walked into the church cemetery and fired a single shot into her chest, according to Yarbrough.
People working at the church heard the noise and went to the cemetery, where they discovered the woman, Yarbrough said. Sheriff's deputies responded, along with local EMS units, and the woman was transported by Air Rescue 1 to Atlanta Medical Center.
As of late Friday, the victim was still at the hospital and alive, Yarbrough said on Saturday. The extent of the woman's injuries is unknown.
