One person is dead and two were taken to Atlanta Medical Center after an accident Friday morning in the 4700 block of U.S. Highway 27 Alternate south of Moreland.

One woman was killed and two others seriously injured in a single-vehicle wreck south of Moreland early Friday.

The driver of the 2006 Ford Econoline Van, Sheila Williams Strong, 47, of LaGrange, died at the scene, according to authorities.

The names of the other two women were not immediately available. One was flown by air ambulance to Atlanta Medical Center, while the second was taken to AMC by ground ambulance.

The accident occurred around 11:30 a.m. on U.S. Highway 27 Alternate when the southbound van left the highway near mile marker 1 in Coweta County, said Georgia State Patrol spokesperson Franka Young.

The van then went down a deep ditch and ended up about 40 yards off the roadway in the woods after striking a tree, according to Allan Smith, assistant chief with the Coweta County Fire Department.

The van, with a Troup County license tag, had the name Palbert Transportation on the back and was equipped for handicap usage, he added.

There were no apparent skidmarks, and authorities are surmising the driver might have had a medical emergency, such as a heart attack, prior to leaving the roadway.
