The public is invited to watch the inauguration of Barack Obama as America's 44th president Tuesday at the Wood Clay Community Center on Newnan's west side.
AmVets Post 910, better known as the Terry Allen Jr. Buffalo Soldiers, will be sponsoring the event, which will start at 10 a.m. The official inaugural events start at 11:30 a.m., with the new president expected to take the oath of office about noon.
Newnan Mayor Pro-Tem Cynthia Jenkins had also planned a gathering at the Newnan Water and Light Cabin, but when she learned about the Amvets gathering, she decided to encourage people to attend that event instead.
The Wood Clay Center is located at 135 Heery Road west of Newnan between Westside School Road and Franklin Highway.
"I'm still making the white chicken chili -- just a lot more of it now," Jenkins said.
Jenkins said her plans for a gathering started "as a group that wanted to watch history together." She said, "I think it's important to recognize just how special this is no matter what the political affiliation or who you voted for. His election is definitely proof of the great opportunity this country has for everyone."
The presidential inauguration will be held on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol. Music will be provided by the U.S. Marine Band, the San Francisco Boys Chorus and the San Francisco Girls Chorus, Aretha Franklin and the U.S. Navy Band "Sea Chanters."
There also will be a musical selection by composer/arranger John Williams and featuring Itzhak Perlman, violin; Yo-Yo Ma, cello; Gabriela Montero, piano; Anthony McGill, clarinet.
Elizabeth Alexander will read a poem. U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein will welcome the crowd. Dr. Rick Warren will give the invocation, and Dr. Joseph E. Lowery of Atlanta will give the benediction.
Joseph Biden will take the oath as vice president before the presidential oath. Associate Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens will administer the oath to Biden.
