Officers caught up with a suspect at his apartment recently after he wrecked his vehicle and abandoned it in the roadway because he was intoxicated and driving illegally.
Oscar Pena, 29, of 18-A Georgian Drive in Newnan, wrecked his Ford Explorer head-on into a utility pole near Hollis Heights June 21 at approximately 2:30 a.m., according to a Newnan Police incident report.
Pena abandoned his vehicle and fled the scene on foot in the direction of Waverly Circle, according to the incident report.
A witness at the scene told police that he had spoken to the driver before he fled.
Officer Brent McComas found Pena's cell phone on the ground next to the vehicle. The officer also found check stubs with Pena's name on them in the floorboard of the SUV. While conducting the investigation, Pena's mother called her son's cell phone. She explained to the officer that Pena had called his sister following the wreck. She told the officer that he ran because he had no license and was scared, according to the incident report.
The officer and Pena's mother went to Pena's apartment and found him passed out on his bed, according to the report. The officer roused him and asked if he'd been driving earlier, and he admitted that he had. He told police that he accidentally hit a pole and then fled because he was scared and didn't know what to do.
Pena was transported back to the accident scene where the witness confirmed the accident. Pena was arrested for DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, no license, no insurance and expired tag.
The following unrelated incidents were reported by the Newnan Police Department:
*Jennifer Roberts, 26, of Newnan, was arrested on Monday for stalking and violating a protective order filed against her in April.
According to the victim, 24-year-old Mollie McAfee, she was visiting a relative on Burdette Place when Roberts violated a protective order by driving by the residence and throwing papers into the street. The protective order stipulated that Roberts not make any contact with McAfee and that she stay 200 feet away. McAfee told police that Roberts had been contacting her at her residence, at work and by phone.
While the officer was interviewing the victim, Roberts approached again in her vehicle and, upon noticing the officer, sped away, according to the report.
Roberts was stopped by police on Berry Avenue and taken to the Coweta County Jail.
*Brittany Allen, 18, was arrested Monday for simple assault under the Family Violence Act after she pulled a knife on her father. Jimmy Allen told police he disciplined her with a switch, and that he was not in fear of being injured by his daughter during the incident.
Allen struggled with officers as she was placed into custody.
