Two teens injured in speed-related wreck

By Amy Lott

The Times-Herald

Excessive speed was most likely the cause of an accident in Newnan Monday evening involving four local teenagers, authorities say.

According to Officer Brent McComas of the Newnan Police Department, Carlos Florence, 18, was driving northbound on Wall Street in a 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer around 5:15 p.m. when he lost control of the vehicle on a curve. The four-door passenger car skidded more than 500 feet before barreling into the grass and striking a utility pole in front of the Mr. Carpet business, he said.

McComas said the pole split in two upon impact and fell onto the roof of the car, crushing the front half of the vehicle occupied by Florence and passenger Jasmine Walker, 18.

Back seat passenger Terry White, 18, and a 15-year-old female, also in the back seat, were reportedly uninjured.

Florence was taken by ambulance to Atlanta Medical Center for treatment of back injuries, and Walker was transported to Piedmont Newnan Hospital.

Speeding charges may be pending, McComas said, because Florence was driving more than 50 mph in a 25-mph-zone.

No alcohol or drugs appear to be involved, authorities said.
