The Sharpsburg post office is once again extending a helping hand to Coweta County's "angels."
Ann Kerlin, a mail carrier and an event organizer, said that for nearly the past decade, the post office has decided to head up a community project that culminates in an annual Angel Ride to spread holiday cheer to the less fortunate.
The post office has already mailed out cards inviting the community to adopt an angel -- which can be children with the Department of Family and Children Services or seniors at Avalon Nursing Home or the Tommy Thompson Senior Center. This year, the post office is aiming to help 400-500 people in this community.
Anyone interested in sponsoring an angel can contact the post office and obtain a wish list for one or more people. Gifts can be dropped off at the post office, 6545 Highway 54 in Sharpsburg, or the public can call and arrange to have a carrier pick up the gift. The deadline for the post office to collect presents is Dec. 1, according to Kerlin.
"The response has been wonderful, but we still have some children left on the list," said Kerlin. The public can contact the post office by phone, 770-252-3761.
The Angel Ride will be on Dec. 19 as carriers throw a Christmas party at Avalon.
"We take snacks, sing Christmas carols and give out hugs, cookies and gifts," said Kerlin.
The children's gifts are disseminated through DFCS.
"This is certainly a group project," said Kerlin. "The community donates all the gifts, we're just the facilitator. This is the community doing for the community."

I have had the privlege to participate in this worthy cause for three years now and I must say it is the highlight of my Christmas season. One year a poor lady asked for bug spray for Christmas. Can you imaging? I bought this lady her request, plus bags full of things she did not request, things for herself. There is no greater reward than giving to those who truly need a hand from those of us who are able to do so. Congratulations to the Sharpsburg post office for this humanitarian endeavour.
