The truck driver in a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 85 southbound at Moreland's Exit 41 Tuesday afternoon has been cited by the Georgia State Patrol.
Tuesday at approximately 4:30 p.m. the driver of a tractor-trailer -- later identified as Edward James Clements Jr., of Bay St. Louis, Miss. -- came off the exit ramp "a little too hot," according to Trooper George Cotton of the Georgia State Patrol Post 24 in Newnan.
The vehicle struck some barrels and the weight shifted in the trailer -- Clements was hauling 41,000 pounds of cotton and yarn. The tractor-trailer overturned on the driver's side, according to Cotton. The vehicle skidded 318 feet while it was upright, and another 133 feet after it overturned. It finally settled off the roadway.
Clements, who was briefly entrapped in the cab, was transported to Piedmont Newnan Hospital with complaints of back pain, according to the trooper. The driver did not suffer any serious, life-threatening injuries, and nobody else was involved in the accident.
"The driver made a quick turn because he was having some tire issues," said Cotton on Wednesday. "He was pulling off to try and get the tire repaired."
Clements was cited for failure to maintain lane and warned for having defective tires because the tread was close to the violation level, according to Cotton. Cotton said it's very important for truck drivers to conduct a pre-trip inspection of their rig.
It took emergency crews more than three hours to get the vehicle upright, meanwhile a Georgia Department of Transportation's Highway Emergency Response Operators (HEROs) unit closed Exit 41 and rerouted traffic to Exit 35.
"I appreciate the emergency services that responded, including the fire department, EMS, the county [sheriff's office] and the DOT's HERO units. Their involvement in this helped avoid total clutter and a major back-up," said Cotton.
