A Newnan man, attempting to run from police, was captured after being stunned with a taser several times.
Andreco Leon Atkinson, 29, was charged with possession of narcotics with intent, obstruction, resisting arrest, violation of parole and driving on a suspended license, according to Coweta County Jail records.
The incident began early Monday when a Newnan Police Department officer noticed a vehicle with a broken taillight. The officer followed and eventually pulled behind the vehicle, which by now was in a field off Price Street, the officer reported.
When the officer activated his blue lights, Atkinson jumped out and dropped plastic bags as he ran and an officer pursued, the officer reported.
"I then deployed my X26 Taser with both prongs hitting Atkinson in the back," the officer reported. "I activated the taser several times, but Atkinson never went to the ground. With each cycle, Atkinson did slow down to where I was able to get close enough to tackle Atkinson to the ground."
Other officers arrived and later found four plastic bags of suspected marijuana on the ground.
Another bag was found in Atkinson's pocket, the report said.
Atkinson was taken to Piedmont Newnan Hospital for treatment of a small laceration on his head that he received when he fell on asphalt and was later transported to the jail, the officer stated in the incident report.s
