Murphy Johnson (right) of 75 Windom Drive in Moreland discusses what remains of his workshop with family members after Sunday's severe weather destroyed it, a pontoon boat and camper trailer.

A thunderstorm turned severe just east of downtown Moreland on Sunday.

Murphy Johnson had a pontoon boat, camper trailer and workshop destroyed at his 75 Windom Drive residence in Moreland. It occurred shortly after 2 p.m. as pockets of thunderstorms were passing through Coweta County.

"I heard strong winds but it never occurred to me that it might be a tornado," said Murphy. "I couldn't believe my eyes when I went outside. My (workshop) was gone and only a pile was left."

Debris from the shed and camper were found some 200 yards away.

"I just can't imagine what would of happened if I was in my (workshop)," Johnson said.

No severe weather warnings had been issued for Coweta County at any time during the day. Other significant weather incidents in nearby areas on Sunday were reports of hail in both Troup and Henry Counties. In fact, The Newnan Times-Herald weather station recorded a high wind gust of only 17 mph on Sunday about the time of the storm in Moreland.

Downtown Newnan received 1.16 inches of rain yesterday. That amount has helped push the April total of rainfall to 4.50 inches.

The Newnan Times-Herald will report further information on this storm as it becomes available.
