Coweta soccer programs are hurting due to the drainage problems at Whitlock Park.

Soggy fields problem, says soccer association

By Sarah Fay Campbell

The Newnan Times-Herald

Soggy fields have always been a problem at the Whitlock complex, the home of Coweta's soccer and softball programs -- even during dry years.

But this year, "we are really, really in trouble with the rain we have been having," said Chris Cook, executive director of the Coweta County Soccer Association.

Cook appeared before the Coweta County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday.

Cook said he and CCSA board member Chuck Lee attended Tuesday's commission meeting "just to understand the process you guys go through."

The association has more than 1,400 players, Cook said.

"We are really in big trouble with our facilities at Whitlock, and not able to provide a facility for our kids to participate," Cook said. Spring practice began this week, he said, but any amount of rain renders the fields unusable.

"We can't put the kids out there. We're in really big trouble," he said. "We are losing participants -- players are leaving, and they're going to Fayette County, on a regular basis, because they can't participate on our fields."

Whitlock Park, located on Walt Sanders Memorial Drive off Hwy. 34 East, was built on donated property, which happened to be in the floodplain.

The soccer association works hard to provide a staff, uniforms and most everything else for the league, except the fields, officials said.

Currently, Cook said, the soccer association doesn't have access to Coweta's Hunter Complex recreation facility on Highway 16 East. "It's not really being used at all, and the fields are in great condition," Cook said.

He said he'd like to get on the commission agenda in the future, but "I just wanted to make that statement to you guys."

Commission Chairman Paul Poole said he had spoken to Assistant County Administrator Eddie Whitlock, and "he told me y'all had a meeting and worked out some suggestions and ideas on how to drain" the fields.

Poole also informed Cook that creating new recreation fields was discussed extensively at a recent commission work session. The county plans to do some work on the property around the Central Library in order to create practice fields.

"But, here again, we're having to wait until it quits raining," Poole said.

Cook said the association has rented some fields in Peachtree City for practices. The teams can use some middle school fields, but the fields don't have lighting for night play, he said.

Commissioner Randolph Collins asked why the soccer teams don't have access to the fields at the Hunter Complex.

"It must be a scheduling" issue, said County Administrator Theron Gay.

"I would like them to have access to Hunter," Collins said. "I would imagine that Hunter dries out quicker than Whitlock."

Cook said the soccer association has looked at private land as well. "We might need a multi-sport complex," he said. He's thinking something in the 100-acre range. "That is something I have talked to some developers and business owners to do something like that, which would benefit the county tremendously."

"We really want to look at the future, what is going to happen," Cook said. And beyond the flooding issue, "Whitlock needs to be renovated," he said.

"We're working with you and we ask that y'all work with us, too, which you are," Poole said. "It's just extremely wet out there."

I would rather the county take the money for the worthless swimming pool and put into the soccer fields since more kids use them then the pool.

It is like your childs education. If you don't like what the recreation department has to offer, enroll the little Pele's in a private organization that has its own facilities. Oh yea, then you would have to pay the full cost instead of being subsidized by the government. Another case of people who want caviar but live on a fish stick budget! If you cannot afford this, then I don't guess that junior should be playing.

Why don't all of these people who desire to use these facilities just pony up the dollars to improve them?? It is not your right to use these facilities just because you are a tax payer in Coweta County. Raise the registration fees for the users instead of spending my tax dollars on something that I will never use. Using the county facilities is a privilege, not a right as a tax payer. If Whitlock needs renovating, the people who use it should pay for the renovation, NOT the tax payers.

George B. You may not be concerned with our kids since you don’t have any. But you should be, as soccer and the dedication and discipline that it takes helps mold our children into the future productive members of society. The very same adults that may one day be making the decisions that affect your life. That is why.

To all you naysayers, I am confident when I say; "I am sure that there are many pet projects, err...amphitheatre, that use tax payer monies that I do not necessarily consider a priority over complexes for these kids". Very recently, well over 50% of the little league football registration in PTC was from Coweta. Now that PTC has run them out, they need a facilty. The same goes for baseball. SBA can only handle so many kids in a facility that is not up to par either. All I can say is thank goodness for our churches who are doing everything they can. It is time for the county to understand the real scope of this problem.

Not just for kids

2/7/2010

Link To This Comment

Soccer is not just for kids, adults play too and it is good that CCSA offers adult leagues. This is the only form of adult sports in all of Coweta County, and it would be a shame to loose players (and lots of revenue) to another county. It is hard to retain people when the fields are constantly closing (btw, in soccer it is normal to play in the rain, but it is not possible in the Whitlock fields). Hopefully the county government will see how they are living about 20 years in the past, and start supporting a growing sport. Even Troup County has state of the art fields (and they are much more rural than Coweta). The other complexes in Coweta are very under utilized, so why can't CCSA get on the schedule and use them? Taxpayer funds are already paying for them, shouldn't we use them? The soccer players (both kids and adult leagues) pay to play so don't worry about your tax dollars going to a sport you cannot understand. I am tired of finding many adult athletics offered elsewhere, but not in the county where I pay taxes - no wonder why there are so many unhealthy people in this area.

Not just for kids

2/7/2010

Link To This Comment

This county is in dire need of some adult sports/recreation - exercise is not just for kids. However, the only place that offers it is this soccer association (yes, they do have adult leagues), which is really unfortunate that these fields are constantly closing due to flooding. I also believe that some of the fields & facilities in the county are under utilized. Why not allow the soccer association use these fields? btw - taxpayers are already paying for these other fields to sit and do nothing, we may as well put them to work, make this county healthier, and keep the fees to play these sports (paid by the players not taxpayers) in Coweta County.

County Sports - Complex Needed

2/5/2010

Link To This Comment

Are some of the below comments a bit exaggerated? Yes. But, let's get down to the real issue. There are fairly nice facilities such as the YMCA, Hunter, the fair grounds, the city rec park and not to leave out the Grantville baseball complex. However, the recreation complexes that serve the "wider majority of county/Newnan kids" participating in athletics at CCSA, SRSA, SBA and the football stallions play at are atrocious and do not serve this counties youth in a way that is acceptable or respectable by any means to any parent or tax payer. I would also suggest that with the exception of one or two middle school fields, most others are not at an acceptable standard. It is time that you county commissioners, mayors, state representatives and developers (who have prospered greatly from the county's growth) to build these kids proper and strategically located facilities.

No for your information a kid would not recieve training from these "licensed coaches" if they were not good enough, and soccer is different than any other sport, you have to be able to learn from somebody who actually knows what they're doing besides from a volunteer, which is why when kids get to an older age they need one of these "licensed coaches" that to you knows nothing more than a volunteer parent, well they only have to be licensed by the US soccer Federation..which is the highest level of coaching in the nation, so how about you get a clue? this whole article is about the playing conditions of the fields that I myself have been playing at for a number of years, and if you think her comment is irrelevant, you're no better for taking a shot at her for it, you don't know how good her kids are and don't bring her kids into it..that's about the most shallow thing someone can do. I would just like to say that the softball fields at whitlock are terrible. When it rains the water stands on the fields and it makes it impossible and dangerous to play on the fields. The park is built on swamp land. If this was a boys baseball field or football field the county would make sure they were in good shape but since its for girls softball they don't seem to care about doing anything to solve or help out the problem. The county seems to only care about taking care of the boys in the county when the girls need some help too!! When it rains not only are the fields terrible but you can't even walk from the parking lot to the fields without having to swim to get to the fields.

I'm not knocking parents who coach - but for us who pay good money for our kids to play SOCCER and having fields that basically stink - and commissioners in COWETA county who don't give a crap about soccer - its no wonder alot of folks here are going elsewhere - and yes the CCSA is a business but why should they pay for the awful fields whitlock provides to them - they deserve alot better and so do the KIDS - the kids are what is most important here! I'm positive CCSA would not have any problems paying good money for GOOD fields - for the kids sake.

You're exactly right about the whole "licensed coach" thing. However, I'm perfectly fine with my son getting tee ball instruction from parents that volunteer their time to help kids get introduced to the game. So I guess when you call those coaches "parents who know nothing about the game with the result of the kids not learning/advancing (the right way) at all," you're labeling me since I volunteer my time to be an assistant coach for my team (and my son). And I sure didn't hear any complaints from any of the parents regarding the way we "unlicensed professionals" instructed their kids last year. We may not have the kids hitting like Albert Pujols. But we teach them the basics in a fun, non-competitive environment, which is plenty for a 3, 4, or 5 year old to learn. If the CCSA wants to change venues, that is perfectly fine. But at the same time, don't go criticizing those of us that aren't overbearing parents.

If you were to use them on a regular basis for any sport they would become mud pits....Maybe you should read a little bit on Turf management and Park Planning. Hunter doesn't offer an academy/select soccer program where kids are coached by licensed coaches to get the best learning experience and fun out of the game - kids who sign up at Hunter are coached by parents who know nothing about the game with the result of the kids not learning/advancing (the right way) at all. CCSA has the best coaching staff around - they should be allowed a decent park to practice and play at.

Why should Hunter Complex be forced into making room for the Whitlock Park games??? In case you didn't read the sign on the outfield fence of the little league field, soccer signups have been underway for at least a couple of weeks at Hunter Complex. If you don't like the conditions your kids play in at Whitlock, it's simple- register them at Hunter. Easy fix. The same principle applied to me when I looked into signing up my son for tee ball in Grantville this year- why in the world would I pay $100 to register him when I can do it at Hunter for $55? On top of that, I know what we're getting at Hunter- a field that dries quickly after rain, a good learning environment for my son, and coaches and parents that genuinely care about the kids having a good time.

The Peachtree City complex is great... but there is yet ANOTHER expense added with the drive to another city to practice. Coweta County can do better than this. We have been in Coweta Co. one year and have been very impressed with the soccer association. However, when we pay for our children to participate in the Jr. Academy or in Select Soccer and then we can't practice because of rain or we have to go to PTC or Fairburn to practice it's very frustrating. We feel like it's a waste of money because we don't get the practice time in we have paid for. We know the coaches try their best, especially in Select, to get alternate venues, but many times it just doesn't happen. In Jr. Academy if it rains there is just no practice and we lose our money, which of course is not the coaches fault. I'd love to see us be able to use Hunter Complex or have access to other venues here at home.

What is rediculous is the fact that they put the park there in the first place. It was nice for the land to be donated but that area has flooded everytime it rains every since I was little. I agree that they need another place to play. Who want to pay all of that money to only play half of the time. Soccer is not my thing but those who enjoy playing should have a decent place to play.

Seeing how HUGE the soccer program is in Coweta County, you would think that our children would be accommodated in regards to a practice field that isn't a water logged sink hole. Coweta County has soooo much potential in regards to soccer, it is growing by leaps and bounds. We can host so many tournaments and become well known for this, if only the drainage problems could be dealt with. Come on Coweta do the right thing.

Hunter Complex

The fact that the Hunter Complex goes mostly unsued is very very said. They have GREAT softball fields that the SRSA can't even get access to. I don't know who's behind the politics in regards to the use of the Hunter Complex but they need to do what's best for the kids. Also, they have 3 football fields at Hunter that go largely unused while the Sharpsburg Stallions have to play on horrible fields at Northgate and on Hwy 34 at Heritage church.
Commissioners, please get on top of this.

The county commissioners are out of touch with today's society. This is not a yankee vs. southerner thing. Soccer is here to stay and many kids enjoy playing. Get with the program and allow us to use the county facilities as they are designed, for our youth.

I agree that we need BETTER fields, not just more of them. The county needs to take the soccer program seriously as this sport is increasing in participation. Soccer generates great money for the county and we need to be heard!

We are considering going to Fayette County as well. Too many practices and games are cancelled at Whitlock. My daughter is not getting the practice she needs and wants. Parking is always an issue at Whitlock too. It is ridiculous.

I hope that the CCSA gets the help they need to fix the fields. It is a great place, just needs some work. Good luck! CCSA ya'll do a great job. We love playing out there.

Whitlock Park is unusable - period. It needs a tremendous amount of work that could take years to complete. Hunter Complex has excellent field space to accomodate several sports to include soccer. The park is empty most of the times I have gone there and there's ample parking. It's a shame in a growing county like Coweta with a sport as popular as soccer that accomodations cannot be made to take care of these kids and give them a place to play close to home. With 1,400 kids taking part it could also help our local economy by keeping these kids in Coweta and not sending them to off to Fayette. Scheduling seems as if it would be the easy part, it appears permission is the hard part!

A flood plain is a flood plain unless you raise the ground considerably. And we know the cost of that would not be feasible. A new location is the only answer.
