By Elizabeth Richardson

The Times-Herald

Six suspects were apprehended by authorities Thursday evening on a variety of drug charges.

The Newnan Police Department's City Drug Unit received complaints that residents of 46-F Jefferson Pointe -- located within Jefferson Pointe Apartments -- were running a drug operation and selling drugs, according to Danny McDonald, head of the drug unit.

"Members of the city narcotics unit were able to obtain a search warrant for the location with assistance from the Newnan-Coweta Crime Suppression Unit," said McDonald.

Authorities executed the warrant Thursday at approximately 9 p.m. and found a variety of drugs "throughout the residence," as well as a loaded .22 rifle within reach of the suspects. Investigators located a safe in a bedroom containing a large amount of drugs, along with scales and a ledger of sales made, according to McDonald.

"Everything went smoothly," according to the detective, and all of the occupants of the apartment were taken into police custody.

Joe Lewis Wood, 21, of 34 Jefferson Parkway, is charged with possession of marijuana. Jayson S. Russell, 27, of Atlanta, is charged with possession marijuana. Residents of the apartment where the search warrant was executed included Carolyn Bell, 42, Laura Thurmond, 21, Samuel Thurmond, 24, and Casey Gregory Thompson, 19. All of the residents are charged with possession of Schedule I narcotics (Ecstasy) with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession Schedule III drugs (Hydrocodone), and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
