Sharpsburg teen burned when aerosol can explodes

By Elizabeth Richardson

The Times-Herald

An unidentified 14-year-old male from Sharpsburg is being treated for severe burns at the Grady Hospital Burn Center in Atlanta after an aerosol paint can tossed into a small outdoor fire exploded.

The incident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. Monday at 1789 Minix Road in Sharpsburg, according to Coweta Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Todd Moore. Crews from Station 7 on Fischer Road and Station 12 off Highway 154 responded to the scene and found that the victim had received severe burns to his upper extremities.

"The severity of the burns and possibility of injury to the respiratory tract required rapid transport to a burn center," said Moore. Rescue Air transported the patient to the Grady Burn Center in Atlanta for treatment.

Witnesses at the scene told firefighters that the injuries were received after an aerosol paint can was thrown into a small fire that was burning to clean debris from around the home.

Fire department officials remind citizens that burning tree trash is permissible with a burn permit, but burning trash or construction debris is prohibited.

"The introduction of the aerosol can into the fire created a very hazardous condition that resulted in a "BLEVE" -- boiling liquid expansion vapor explosion," said Moore. "This occurs when the content of the container is heated to a temperature that creates tremendous pressure within the container. When the container fails, the contents escape and ignite, causing a flash fire. The container shoots through the air as if it were a missile.

"The fire and the projectile both become immediately dangerous to the life and health of anyone in the general area," he warned.
