Shaken baby case starts Monday

By Elizabeth Richardson

The Times-Herald

The trial for Michael Gene Eskew, the man accused of shaking an infant to the point of permanent brain damage, is scheduled to begin Monday in Coweta Superior Court.

Eskew is charged with two counts of aggravated battery for allegedly physically abusing a then-6-month-old baby boy in April. The infant, who was not breathing, was taken to the hospital on April 1. Eskew was arrested April 4 and has been held at the Coweta County Jail without bond.

According to the District Attorney's office, the investigation has concluded that the baby, who is now 14-months-old, had been shaken violently -- causing a skull fracture that resulted in "profound disabilities and irreversible brain damage, including blindness and loss of voluntary motor functions." The baby's condition has not changed and only time will tell the full extent of the brain damage, according to Assistant District Attorney Andrea Newton, the prosecutor in the case.

Judge Jack Kirby is scheduled to preside over the trial. Public Defender Jerry Pittman will represent Eskew.
